Valentine’s Day Hype

I am not a fan of Valentine’s Day. I actually really dislike this card and candy company holiday. The origins of this “holiday” go back to pagans not Christians. Lupercalia was celebrated in February as a pagan fertility holiday. Lupercalia was still popular when the Catholic church became more dominant in culture. The Pope ended up creating February 14 as St. Valentine’s Day after the pagan holiday was outlawed. The popularity of Valentine’s Day continued in the 1800s and today an estimated 145 million cards are given on this holiday. Check out the History Channel for details.

So what is my beef with a day of candy, flowers, and printed cards proclaiming love? First, why do you need a designated day to tell someone you love them? Is this your one day you treat your significant other well and the other 364 days you treat them with cool indifference? Also why do you need someone else to validate you in this way? YOU CAN TELL YOURSELF EVERY DAY “I LOVE MYSELF” and validate yourself. You do not need outside validation and be co-dependent on others to see and state your worth. YOU ARE WORTHY because you exist. That’s it!

I have seen people run themselves ragged and go through the same cycle over and over and over again. A person will say they want something different for themselves or their children but then they stay stuck in that unhealthy pattern of relying on others when there is so much they can take responsibility for and move forward on. “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results” per Einstein. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars this year trying to force a relationship with someone else, please take some of that money and do something nice for yourself. I do not care if you buy make up, a drink, food, lottery tickets, or a new bathroom mat. Buy yourself something and be kind to yourself. YOU deserve to treat YOU well.

If any of you are interested in joining the email list, you can click here Say Yes to Yourself website. In addition to buying the book on Amazon either as a Kindle ebook or a paperback, you can order them from the publisher Balboa Press or contact me directly. I’m also available for speaking engagement. My goal is to get people to start doing self-care. More self-care and more self-love can create a more beautiful and peaceful world.

Have a great day…whether it is a “holiday” or a regular day.
